Exemestane, known by the brand name Aromasin, is a medication used to treat breast cancer. It belongs to the antiestrogen class known as aromatase inhibitors. Some types of breast cancer require estrogen to thrive. These cancers are ER-positive because they have estrogen receptors (ERs). They are also referred to as estrogen-responsive, hormonally responsive, or hormone-receptor-positive. Aromatase is an enzyme that aids in the production of estrogen. Aromatase inhibitors prevent estrogen synthesis. This reduces estrogen levels and slows cancer growth.
