Why is this medication prescribed?
Temazepam 20mg UK is a short-acting sedative to treat insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep). Temazepam belongs to the benzodiazepine family of drugs. It works by slowing brain activity to allow sleep.
How should this medicine be used?
Temazepam is commonly taken before bedtime as needed and should be taken exactly as prescribed. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and if there is anything you don’t understand, ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain it to you. You will most likely become quite drowsy shortly after taking temazepam and will remain sleepy for some time afterward. Every time you refill your prescription, you’ll get a Medication Guide from your doctor/pharmacist with the manufacturer’s information leaflet.

What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking temazepam,
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to temazepam or any of its ingredients. Ask your pharmacist for a list of the ingredients, or visit www.pharmacygatedown.com for more information about prescription drug safety in the UK.
- Tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products you plan to take. Antidepressants and antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and digoxin (Lanoxin) are among the medications you may want to mention.
- Tell your doctor if you have ever thought about killing yourself or tried to do so and if you have or have ever had any condition that affects your breathing, seizures, or kidney or liver disease.
- If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, don’t take this drug if you are taking it while under the influence of alcohol or have taken it before.
- If you are 65 and older, you may need to take lower doses of this medication because higher doses may not be more effective or cause serious side effects.
- If you have dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking temazepam.
- Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you. This medication may make you drowsy during the daytime and decrease your mental alertness. Take extra care to ensure you do not fall, especially if you get out of bed in the middle of the night.
- Some people who took medications for sleep got out of bed and drove their cars. After they woke up, these people were usually unable to remember what they had done. Call your doctor right away if you find out that you have been driving or doing anything else while sleeping.
- Tell your doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms: aggressiveness, strange or unusually outgoing behavior, hallucinations or memory problems. New or worsening depression, thinking about killing yourself, confusion, and any other changes in your usual thoughts, mood, or behavior.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, continue your normal diet.
What should I do if I forget a dose?
Temazepam should only be taken at bedtime. If you did not take temazepam at bedtime and you are unable to fall asleep, you may take temazepam if you will be able to remain in bed for 7 to 8 hours afterward. Do not take temazepam if you are not ready to go to sleep right away and stay asleep for at least 7 to 8 hours.
